August is the toughest stretch of the year for air conditioners across East Texas. Long runs of triple-digit afternoons mean your system rarely gets a chance to cycle off, and any small weakness in the equipment shows up quickly.
Most emergency AC repair calls we take this month trace back to the same handful of issues. Knowing what they look like helps you act before a minor problem becomes a full breakdown.

1. The System Runs Constantly but Never Cools
When outdoor temperatures climb past 100 degrees, an undersized, dirty, or low-charge system simply cannot keep up. If your thermostat is set at 74 and the house sits at 80 all afternoon, the cause is usually a dirty condenser coil, a restricted filter, or low refrigerant from a slow leak.
Rinse the outdoor coil with a garden hose and replace the filter. If the temperature gap does not close within a few hours, schedule AC repair — running a starved system in August is how compressors fail.
2. Frozen Evaporator Coil
Ice on the indoor coil or refrigerant line looks strange in summer heat, but it is common. Poor airflow or low refrigerant lets the coil drop below freezing, and once ice forms, cooling stops entirely.
Turn the system to "fan only" to thaw the coil, then replace the filter. Repeated freezing means there is an underlying airflow or charge problem that needs a technician.
3. Failed Capacitor or Contactor
A humming outdoor unit with a fan that will not spin is the classic sign of a failed run capacitor. Heat is hard on these parts, which is why August produces so many of these calls. Capacitors and contactors are inexpensive and fast to replace, but they involve stored electrical charge and should be handled by a licensed technician.

4. Water Around the Indoor Unit
High humidity means your system pulls a lot of condensation out of the air. When the condensate drain clogs with algae or dust, that water backs up into the pan and onto the floor. A wet-vac on the drain line outside clears many clogs, but recurring overflow points to a bigger drainage issue.
5. Breaker Trips in the Afternoon
If your AC trips the breaker during the hottest part of the day, the compressor is drawing more current than it should. Do not keep resetting it. Repeated resets can destroy the compressor — the single most expensive component in the system.
When to Call for AC Repair
Call right away if you notice burning smells, loud grinding or banging, water damage, or a breaker that will not stay set. Call soon if cooling is weak, bills have jumped, or the system short-cycles.
Free State Heating & Cooling has been repairing air conditioners across Canton, Athens, Mabank, Kaufman, Forney, and the surrounding communities since 1993, with 24/7 emergency service when the heat will not wait.
